What you're paying for

Our team is trained in horticulture, so the people mowing your lawn know what a healthy lawn needs and notice when something's wrong.

  • Spotting lawn grubs early, before they eat out a patch of the lawn
  • Noticing tired, patchy or dry spots and telling you what's causing them
  • Seasonal lawn applications and advice when the lawn needs them
  • Trying organic methods first wherever practical

How often

How often to mow a Brisbane lawn

Spring, summer and autumn

Brisbane lawns grow fast through the warmer months, and fastest in the heat and after storms. We recommend a weekly mow to keep the grass short, healthy and easy to look after.

Winter

Grass slows right down. Most lawns can go three or four weeks between mows.

The price

What changes the cost of mowing

The table is a fair guide for most Brisbane house blocks. These are the things that move your price up or down from it.

How big the lawn is

The size of the block sets most of the price. Two blocks of the same size can still differ: a house with a pool and big garden beds has far less lawn than one with a wide open backyard.

Shape and slope

Long narrow strips, tight corners and steep banks take longer to mow than a flat rectangle. A corner block usually has more footpath and edging to do as well.

Things to mow around

Trees, garden beds, sheds, play gear, pavers set into the grass and lots of edges all add time, because each one has to be edged and trimmed by hand.

Getting in

Narrow side gates, steps and lawns you can only reach through the house mean smaller mowers and more trips, so the job takes longer.

Type and length of grass

Thick grasses like buffalo are slower to mow than finer ones. Grass that has been left to grow long often needs cutting twice for a tidy finish, and makes a lot more clippings to take away.

How often we come

A lawn mowed every week stays short, so each visit is quicker. That's why regular visits cost less per mow than a one off job.

Behind the price

Where your money goes

A cheap mow can look like a bargain until something goes wrong. This is what a professional, properly insured lawn service pays for out of every visit.

Wages, super and WorkCover

Our lawns are mowed by a two person crew on proper wages, and we pay their super and WorkCover. That's the biggest part of every price.

Insurance

We're fully insured, with public liability and workers compensation cover. It costs money every year, and it protects you as well as us.

Vehicles

Our vehicles need fuel, rego, insurance, servicing and, one day, replacing.

Equipment

We use quieter, modern electric mowers, trimmers and blowers. They need batteries, repairs and replacing as they wear out.

Green waste

We take your clippings away, and the green waste facility charges us to drop them off.

Running the business

Quotes, scheduling, accounts, training and our phone all cost time and money.

GST

Our prices include GST. That 10% goes to the government, not to us.

Choosing

What to ask before you pick a mowing service

Price matters, but it isn't the only thing. These questions tell you more about who you're letting into your yard.

  • Are they fully insured, with public liability and workers compensation cover?
  • Is the team police checked before they work at your home?
  • Is the price agreed before they start, and do you know what it includes?
  • Do they take the clippings away, or leave them for you?
  • Do they turn up when they say, and tell you if the weather moves the visit?
  • Will they look after your pets, gates and garden beds while they work?
Questions

Lawn mowing cost questions

How much does it cost to mow a 450 m² block in Brisbane?

With The Garden Barber, a regular mow on a 450 m² house block is about $120, GST included. A block with lots of garden beds, a pool or a big house usually comes in lower, and a wide open lawn or a steep one comes in higher.

Is there a minimum charge?

Yes. The smallest visit is $99, GST included, which covers getting the crew and equipment to your place and the mow, edge and blow.

Do your prices include GST?

Yes. Every price on this page includes GST.

Why does a one off mow cost more?

A lawn that hasn't been mowed for a while is longer and thicker, often needs cutting twice, and makes a lot more green waste. We quote one off and overgrown lawns for free once we've seen photos or the property.

Do you charge by the hour?

No. We price each job, so you know what a visit costs before we start, however long it takes on the day.

Do you take the clippings away?

Yes. Taking the green waste away is part of every visit.

Can you do the hedges and garden beds on the same visit?

Yes. We can trim hedges, prune, weed and look after the garden beds while we're there. Ask for it in your quote and we'll price the whole visit.
