Trained in horticulture

What you're paying for

Our team is trained in horticulture. Every visit is about keeping the garden healthy for years, as well as neat on the day.

  • Pruning each plant at the right time for how it grows, like leaving a flowering shrub alone until it has bloomed
  • Spotting pests and disease early, before they spread through the garden
  • Looking after the soil the plants grow in, with mulch and compost
  • Trying organic methods first wherever practical

Every visit

What a garden visit includes

  • Pruning and shaping shrubs and small ornamental trees
  • Weeding garden beds, paths and edges
  • Mulching and looking after the soil
  • Checking the irrigation is reaching the plants
  • Plant health advice, so problems are caught early
  • Taking the green waste away with us

We try organic methods first wherever practical, and use quieter, modern electric equipment, so there are no petrol fumes.

How often

How often to book a gardener

Fortnightly

For gardens on show from the street, fast growing planting, or homes that need to look sharp all the time.

Monthly

For established gardens that need a horticultural eye on the pruning, beds and plant health rather than a constant tidy.

A reset, then ongoing visits

For gardens that have got away. We bring it back first, then keep it there. We'll recommend a schedule once we've seen the property.

The price

What changes the cost of garden maintenance

The table is a fair guide for most Brisbane gardens. These are the things that move your price up or down from it.

How big the garden is

The area of garden beds, shrubs and planting sets most of the price. A courtyard with a few pots and beds is a short visit. A big established garden with long beds and lots of shrubs takes a lot longer.

How much it has grown

A garden kept on top of every visit is quick to look after. One that has been left for months needs a reset first: heavier pruning, more weeds and a lot more green waste.

What's planted

Formal shrubs and feature plants need careful shaping by hand. Fast growing screens and climbers need cutting back more often.

Getting in

Steep blocks, steps, narrow side gates and gardens you can only reach through the house all take longer, and so does carrying green waste out from the back.

Green waste

Every load we take away costs us to drop off. A visit with a big load of green waste costs more than one that leaves a few bags.

How often we come

Regular visits keep each one shorter, because the garden never gets far behind. A garden visited every few months needs more work each time.

Behind the price

Where your money goes

This is what a professional, properly insured garden service pays for out of every visit.

Wages, super and WorkCover

Our gardens are looked after by a two person crew on proper wages, and we pay their super and WorkCover. That's the biggest part of every price.

Horticultural know how

Our team is trained in horticulture, so pruning and plant care suit how each plant grows.

Insurance

We're fully insured, with public liability and workers compensation cover. It costs money every year, and it protects you as well as us.

Vehicles and equipment

Our vehicles need fuel, rego, insurance and servicing, and our quieter, modern electric tools need batteries, repairs and replacing.

Green waste

We take your green waste away, and the green waste facility charges us to drop it off.

Running the business

Quotes, scheduling, accounts, training and our phone all cost time and money.

GST

Our prices include GST. That 10% goes to the government, not to us.

Choosing

What to ask before you pick a gardener

Price matters, but it isn't the only thing. These questions tell you more about who's looking after your garden.

  • Are they fully insured, with public liability and workers compensation cover?
  • Is the team police checked before they work at your home?
  • Do they know plants? Ask if their team is trained in horticulture.
  • Is the price agreed before they start, and do you know what it includes?
  • Do they take the green waste away, or leave it for you?
  • Do they try gentler, organic methods first where they can?
Questions

Garden maintenance cost questions

How much does a gardener cost in Brisbane?

With The Garden Barber, a regular visit to a typical Brisbane house garden is about $350 to $530, GST included. Small gardens and courtyards are about $175 to $265, and large established gardens are about $530 to $880.

Is there a minimum charge?

Yes. The smallest visit is $99, GST included.

Do your prices include GST?

Yes. Every price on this page includes GST.

Do you charge by the hour?

No. We price each job, so you know what a visit costs before we start, however long it takes on the day.

Is green waste removal included?

Yes. Taking the green waste away is part of every visit.

Why does a first visit or a clean up cost more?

A garden that hasn't been looked after for a while needs more pruning and weeding, and makes a lot more green waste. Once it's back in shape, regular visits are shorter. We quote clean ups for free once we've seen photos or the property.

How often should I book a gardener?

Most gardens suit a fortnightly or monthly visit. Gardens that have got away need a reset first, then ongoing visits. We'll recommend a schedule once we've seen the property.
